Running Virtualized VMware Virtual InfrastructureI've been beginning to work on a VMware Virtual Infrastructure project for work lately. Our current installations are pseudo-production, so it's limited as to how much I can mess around with them. I'd read that one of the downsides to VMware workstation 6.5 betas is that it won't run ESX anymore, which led me to consider running Virtual Infrastructure in Workstation to do some testing on things like the DR features and whatnot. This document has a good outline of what needs to be done to make this work. Make sure you follow it step-by-step, otherwise it won't work. I also set up an Openfiler iSCSI SAN for storage. So, I had 2 ESX servers, 1 VirtualCenter Windows box and Openfiler all running on VMware workstation. While it worked, it was painfully slow. You just can't do it with 2 GB of RAM - I need more RAM. Assuming I can get some more memory (Which I believe more was ordered for me), this seems like a good way to do basic testing of functionality. |
